Even though we have been to the doctor twice before, today was considered the first “real” appointment. Two weeks old today, my how time flies! Well, any concerns we had about Mason II not gaining weight were resolved today. In the past week he has gained over a pound. The doctor actually thought perhaps we were still supplementing him. She was pleased when I said that he was exclusively on breast milk. Today’s check up put him at 9 pounds 9 ounces, which is an increase of 7 ounces over his birth weight. His head circumference is 14.5 inches and his length is 21 inches.
In addition to all the measuring, he received his first immunization of many. This one was for Hepatitis B. My mom was with me at the doctors and she asked what Hepatitis B even was and how long they have been immunizing for it. The doctor gave us a great work sheet and explained that it is fairly recent (in my mother’s terms at least) and they have been routinely giving this immunization for about 10 years.
While Mason II tolerated the shot pretty well, I must say that I now understand why my mom stopped taking me for immunizations when I was a kid. Watching the doctor give the shot and hearing his little cry was horrible! He cried so hard for a moment that he almost lost his breath. My eyes welled up with tears and I felt sure that if his tear ducts were working properly that he would have little tears streaming down his cheeks. This was definitely worse than taking the dog for her shots and nail clippings.
